The centre is not real
This is by no means a new idea, but I thought visualising it through an (imprecise) Venn diagram might be worth it
The middle is simply not real. It doesn’t exist if not in the wet dreams of head newspaper editors and the delusions of grandeur of videojournalists. I am firmly within the Editors/Reporters category (though geometry dictates I can’t have an incompetent section in the shared areas, this also exists). It’s why this blog looks awful.
The caveat, of course, is time. Given enough time, you can master, or become competent, at all three professions mentioned. But given a schedule, you will simply not produce the best results in all three categories. Anyone who thinks so is fooling themselves. And the diagram is not about knowing the skill set. It’s about ably executing it. You can BE good at all three, but you cannot DO all three well, not simultaneously, and probably not on the same project – one of the roles will take a backseat, and you will not be able to tell the woods from the trees.
But that little black triangle is what’s required of enterprising, up-and-coming young web-two-point-oh types in today’s media landscape. “And that is why” as a friend of mine put it, “news is shit”.
